7 Signs Your Body Is Asking for Reflexology
Before I say anything else, I'll tell you where I'm coming from.
I'm Laura. I'm a busy mam, so I know exactly what it's like to run on empty and tell yourself you'll sort it out next week. I've also been receiving reflexology myself for decades, long before I ever trained in it. That's honestly why I do this work. I've felt what it does, and I've now seen it in the treatment room often enough to be certain about it. The two things I see shift most reliably are anxiety and sleep, and those two happen to be the things people are most worn down by.
Most people don't book their first reflexology treatment because something dramatic has happened. They book because something small has been going on for months. Sleep that isn't quite restful. Shoulders that never fully drop. A low hum of tension they've stopped noticing because it's become normal.
Your body is usually telling you. We're just not in the habit of listening.
If any of these sound like you, it might be time.
1. You're wrecked, but you can't switch off
This is far and away the most common thing I hear. Exhausted all day, then wide awake at eleven at night with a head that won't stop turning things over.
This is the one I see change fastest. Reflexology brings the body into a genuinely relaxed state, and for a lot of people that's where sleep starts to come back. It's very normal to drift off on the treatment couch. Not one bit rude. It's often the first proper rest someone has had in weeks.
2. Anxiety is sitting in your chest
That fluttery, braced feeling. The sense of being permanently ready for something to go wrong, even when nothing is.
I won't pretend an hour on a couch solves everything, but I've watched an awful lot of people come in tight and leave soft. Clients tell me the calm holds for days afterwards, and with regular treatments it starts to become their baseline rather than a rare visitor.
3. You're carrying tension you can't shift
Tight shoulders. A jaw that clenches. That band across the upper back that no amount of stretching seems to reach.
Reflexology works through gentle pressure on reflex points in the feet that link with different areas of the body. People often describe a sense of things loosening, and not just physically. It's in how they're holding themselves altogether.
4. Your digestion has gone off
Your gut notices stress before your head does. When life gets hectic and you're eating standing up at the counter between school runs, it tends to be the first thing to complain.
Because reflexology supports the body's relaxation response, plenty of people find their digestion settles once the rest of them does.
5. You feel disconnected from your own body
Harder to name, this one, but you'll know it if it's you. Living from the neck up. Going through the days on autopilot. Realising you've no idea how your body actually feels because you haven't checked in with it in months.
Working with the feet is a lovely way back in. There's something about the feet, the part of us in contact with the ground, that brings people down out of their heads and back into themselves.
6. You're in a season of change
A new baby. A bereavement. A move, a separation, a job ending, a birthday that landed differently than you expected.
You don't need to be in crisis to deserve care. Some of the most worthwhile hours I give are simply stillness for someone getting through something hard.
7. You've been putting everyone else first
If you're the one who remembers the appointments, notices the empty milk carton, absorbs everyone's moods and keeps the whole show on the road, you already know this one. I do too.
Care that only goes outwards runs you down eventually. Booking a treatment is a small, practical way of turning a bit of it back towards yourself.
And honestly? Wanting an hour of peace is reason enough on its own. It doesn't need a symptom attached to it. Some of my loveliest regulars come for exactly that.
What actually happens in a session
A reflexology treatment at Loinnir Holistic runs 60 minutes. You stay fully clothed apart from shoes and socks, settled comfortably on the couch, usually reclined with a blanket over you.
We have a quick chat first about how you've been and anything you'd like me to know. Then I work through the feet with varied pressure, taking my time. Most people find it deeply relaxing. Afterwards there's space to come back to yourself before you head off, and I'll tell you to drink plenty of water for the rest of the day.
Reflexology is a complementary therapy. It sits alongside the care you get from your GP, not instead of it, so if you've a medical concern do please bring it to them as well.
Come and see for yourself
If any of the seven landed, take that as your body being fairly clear with you. It rarely gets louder on its own. It just gets better at being ignored.
You can book a reflexology treatment in Inverin, Connemara, a short spin from An Spidéal and Galway city, on the Reflexology service page.
If you'd like something longer, Top to Toe Relaxation combines Indian Head Massage with a full reflexology treatment over 90 minutes. A proper reset from head to toe.
